Stonehenge, Wiltshire
Stonehenge, one of the most important prehistoric monument
and landmarks in Britain, is located in Wiltshire and has attracted visitors from
the earliest of times. One of the most famous sites in the world, Stonehenge was
completed about 3500 years ago and dates back 5000 years in its first stage.
Stonehenge is a timeless monument which stands as a testament to those who built
it, with the first stones thought to have been erected around 2400-2200 BC and the
surrounding circular earth bank and ditch, which constitute the earliest phase of
the monument, have been dated to about 3100 BC.
The site and its surroundings were added to the UNESCO's list of World Heritage
Sites in 1986 and it is a national legally protected Scheduled Ancient Monument.
Archaeological evidence indicates that Stonehenge served as a burial ground from
as early as 3000 BC, with burials continuing at Stonehenge for at least another
500 years.
